Shungite stones have grown increasingly trendy in recent years. These stones are said to have properties that can help your mind, body, and spirit in a variety of ways. Shungite is thought to be a rare stone with anti-pollution, anti-free radical, and anti-germ properties. It's also claimed to help protect you from electromagnetic field exposure. Some individuals think that shungite stones have therapeutic qualities and are similar to crystals. However, shungite stones do not provide all the health advantages that some individuals believe they do. They can, however, assist in certain very specific situations and show promise in others. What is Shungite?

Shungite is an extremely uncommon black stone that contains up to 98 percent carbon. Shunga, a locality in Karelia, Russia, is where it's mostly found. Genuine shungite stones come from the Russian village of Shunga in Karelia. For years, people have been attracted to these stones, and the region is rich in shungite resources.

Types of Shungite

Shungite is a natural mineraloid that contains non-crystalline carbon. There are five types of shungite (though, generally classified into three kinds, more on that later), classified by carbon content. 

Type I Shungite contains more than 98 mass% of glass-like carbon

Type II Shungite contains 35–80 mass% of carbon

Type III Shungite contains 20–35 mass% of carbon

Type IV Shungite contains 10–20 mass% of carbon

Type V Shungite contains <10 mass% of carbon

Shungite of Type III is the most common, and the largest shungite deposits are found in Russia's Karelia area (as of current data.) Shungite often contains quartz, aluminosilicates, feldspars, and carbonates in addition to carbon. Shungite also contains a variety of micro impurities, including Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, and V, which are mainly found as sulphides, sulphates, and oxides. One study by Charykova, M. V. Bornyakova, I. I. Polekhovskii, Y. S. Charykov, N. A. Kustova, and E. V. Arapov O in the 2006 paper titled, "Chemical composition of extracts from shungite and shungite water," in the Russian Journal of Applied Chemistry discovered that Type III shungite also included Cr, Co, Pb, and Mn, in addition to these tiny impurities.

While phrases such as "elite shungite" may imply that there are different grades of shungite, this is not necessarily the case. Shungite is classified into three distinct kinds, each with its unique set of features and characteristics. 

 

 

The distinctions between these three kinds of shungite are as follows:

 

Type 1: Elite (Noble) Shungite

Elite shungite is the rarest form of shungite, with a carbon content of up to 98 percent. It accounts for less than 1% of all shungite discovered in Karelia. Because of its silvery appearance and surface, Elite shungite is the simplest type of shungite to detect and differentiate from others. Because it is significantly more delicate than other varieties of shungite, it is never really treated and is marketed in its natural raw state. Water Purification

Shungite has been used to filter water since early civilizations. This is owing to its claimed antibacterial and antiviral properties. Shungite can filter water by eliminating pollutants and organic compounds like pesticides, according to a 2018 research from the European Journal of Medicine, by Georgi Gluhchev, Ignat Ignatov, and Yuliana Pesheva, titled, “Carbonaceous Fullerene Containing Nano Mineral Shungite. Properties for Purification of Water Detoxification of Human Body.” Carbon from shungite can also eliminate radioactive substances from water, according to a 2017 research, from Elsevier Publications, by Artur Khannanov, Vadim V. Nekljudov, Bulat Gareev, Airat Kiiamov, James M. Tour, and Ayrat M. Dimiev, titled, “Oxidatively modified carbon as efficient material for removing radionuclides from water.”

Bactericide and Viricide

Fullerenes are a kind of carbon nanostructure found in shungite. Carbon nanostructures (CNSs) are various physical forms of carbon. CNSs have the capacity to remove pathogenic microorganisms, according to a review of research published in 2017, in the MDPI Materials Journal, by Ahmed AL-Jumaili, Surjith Alancherry, Kateryna Bazaka, and Mohan V. Jacob, titled, “Review on the Antimicrobial Properties of Carbon Nanostructures.” They are believed to act by causing damage to cellular walls of bacteria and viruses. When microorganisms come into contact with CNSs, they lose electrons and die. However, it is questionable what this signifies in terms of human illness. More research is needed to learn how the fullerenes in shungite impact pathogens specifically.

Antioxidant

Shungite exhibits antioxidant effects, as per a 2017 animal research, by Ma. Easter Joy Sajo, Cheol-Su Kim, Soo-Ki Kim, Kwang Yong Shim, Tae-Young King, and Kyu-Jae Lee, titled, “Antioxidant and Anti-inflammatory Effects of Shungite against Ultraviolet B Irradiation-Induced Skin Damage in Hairless Mice,” from the Oxidative Medicine and Cellular Longevity journal. In this study, the mice were exposed to ultraviolet B radiation for two days by the researchers. On the mice's skin, this manifested in skin damage and oxidative stress. Reactive oxidants, or chemicals that harm healthy cells, produce oxidative stress. The researchers next administered a shungite mixture to the mice's injured skin for seven days. This reduced ROS generation while increasing antioxidant enzyme activity. These findings may appear encouraging, but keep in mind that the study was only conducted on mice. To fully comprehend shungite's antioxidant potential in humans, more study is required.

Lowers Inflammation

Shungite was discovered to decrease inflammation in the same animal research from 2017 (“Antioxidant and Anti-inflammatory Effects of Shungite against Ultraviolet B Irradiation-Induced Skin Damage in Hairless Mice,” from the Oxidative Medicine and Cellular Longevity journal, by Ma. Easter Joy Sajo, Cheol-Su Kim, Soo-Ki Kim, Kwang Yong Shim, Tae-Young King, and Kyu-Jae Lee). Lower levels of inflammatory indicators, such as cytokines, or inflammation-related proteins, were detected by the researchers. Shungite may be beneficial for inflammatory illnesses as a result of this advantage, according to the researchers. Though, more investigation is required once again.

Physical Health Effects

According to Healthline, water permeated with shungite has customarily been used for: allergies, sore throats, asthma, gastric issues, arthritis, kidney problems, liver problems, gallbladder issues, autoimmune disease, pancreatic dysfunction, aiding insomnia, relieving pain, improving energy levels, detoxification of body, and relief of chronic fatigue. Potentially, if shungite contains antioxidant and anti-inflammatory qualities, it may be able to aid with these ailments. But, there is presently no clinical evidence to suggest that shungite-infused water can assist treat these illnesses due to an absence of study. However, the research is old and only includes animals. This phenomenon has some theoretical backing, but further research is needed to discover if it has any human benefits.

POSSIBLE HARMS OF EMF

Since the dawn of time, the sun has sent waves that result in EMFs, or radiation. We can observe the sun's energy radiating out, which we sense as visible light, at the same time as it emits EMFs. In most kinds of radiation, electric and magnetic fields combine to produce a single field. An electromagnetic field is the consequence (EMF). 

In ELF radiation, however, the electric and magnetic fields can work independently. As a result, we refer to these two distinct fields in ELF radiation as "magnetic field" and "electric field." 

To summarize, there are two forms of EMFs to which you may be exposed:

Possible Protection from EMF exposure:

LOW TO MID FREQUENCY EMFS: Remember that extremely low frequency EMFs (ELF-EMFs) and radiofrequency EMFs are included in this category of EMFs (RF-EMFs). Any electric equipment can emit this sort of radiation. Refrigerators and vacuum cleaners are among the gadgets, as are televisions and computer monitors (when they're turned on). Extremely low frequency and radiofrequency EMFs, according to the WHO, are unlikely to create any harmful health consequences. Fullerene Content

Fullerene is a carbon molecule that has undergone an allotropic transformation. It was found in 1985 by Robert Smoli and Robert Curl of the United States, as well as Harold Kroto of the United Kingdom. These scientists were awarded the Nobel Prize in 1996 for their discovery of Fullerenes. CNSs have the capacity to remove pathogenic microorganisms, according to a review of research published in 2017, in the MDPI Materials Journal, by Ahmed AL-Jumaili, Surjith Alancherry, Kateryna Bazaka, and Mohan V. Jacob, titled, “Review on the Antimicrobial Properties of Carbon Nanostructures.” They are believed to act by causing damage to cellular walls of bacteria and viruses. When microorganisms come into contact with CNSs, they lose electrons and die. However, it is questionable what this signifies in terms of human illness. More research is needed to learn how the fullerenes in shungite impact pathogens specifically.

The most well-known is fullerene C60, which contains 60 carbon atoms. Additionally, some types of fullerenes can form complete structures known as nanotubes. Numerous factors contribute to Shungite's uniqueness. It is mostly owing to the presence of Fullerene C 60 in its composition. Molecules of C60 and C70 fullerene were identified from the uncommon mineral shungite, which is also the only natural source of fullerenes. 

Shungite took between 600 million and 2 billion years to form. Interestingly, fullerenes exist on the border between living and non-living nature; they cannot be said to be inanimate, but they are not a living entity either.

What is worth noting is that Shungite, based on scientific study and analysis, actually only contains trace amounts of fullerenes (0.0001 < 0.001%)! How exactly that trace amount of fullerenes actually aid Shungite’s properties, or if they even do, is still largely a mystery with the lack of scientific research in that area.

Fake and Real Shungite in the market

Please keep in mind that a Shungite is not a product that is required to be certified within the territory of the Russian Federation. As a result, several unscrupulous merchants from other towns in Russia and other countries offer Shungite-bearing rocks as genuine. The non-exception to this is the NEW FIND from Colombia- which is genuine Shungite.

The simplest and most popular method is to perform a conductivity test. Shungite has a high concentration of rare forms of carbon, which confers on it the capacity to conduct electricity. This is the simplest approach to use at home. However, what if other minerals can carry electricity as well? For instance, this is a well-known rock called Hematite.

Hematite is a mineral that is either black or gray in color. While this mineral, like shungite, exhibits electrical conductivity, its chemical makeup is totally different. To be precise, 30% of classic black shungite is composed of a rare type of carbon. Hematite is composed of 70% iron and 30% oxide. Fe2O3 is the chemical formula for it. Hematite is a popular iron ore that is used in the smelting of iron and in a variety of other industrial processes. Ukraine, Brazil, Austria, and other nations are home to some of the world's largest and most famous hematite resources. 

Additionally, there are several rocks containing shungite. These are rocks that are similar to shungite but contain a very small quantity of unique carbon, if any at all. It's worth noting that real Shungite is extracted from just one area on Earth: Russia's Republic of Karelia (although this is no longer the case, as reserves of Elite "Noble" Shungite have recently been discovered in Colombia! That will be discussed in greater detail later in the article).

Shungite conducts electric current excellently. When the conductivity is measured using a particular device (electrical conductivity meter (EC meter)), the resistance of the electric current approaches zero, and the real conductivity of shungite, due to its high carbon content, is about 1500 mho/m—a value not seen in other rocks and minerals. It is also relatively light in weight in comparison to its size, due to its near-pure carbon content of around 98 percent. Because this is a highly expensive and uncommon mineral, the likelihood of forging increases.

Common Shungite-Fakes: Iron Ore and Magnetite

Magnetite is a black mineral that is found across the Earth. It is a naturally occurring iron oxide. It resembles a Karelian elite shungite stone, akin to hematite. This is very certainly due to the comparable black hue and metallic luster, as well as the presence of a conchoidal fracture.

Magnetite is a conductor of electricity. However, the primary distinction between magnetite and other minerals is that it exhibits strong magnetic characteristics and will be highly magnetized. Karelian shungite, on the other hand, is not magnetic. However, it conducts electricity due to its composition of a unique allotropic type of carbon.

According to the article, “Shungite application for treatment of drinking water- is it the right choice?,” by Inga Jurgelane and Janis Locs, published in the Journal Water Health in 2021: 

Shungite is a naturally occurring mineral that contains carbon and is frequently utilized in water treatment. According to scientific study, shungite possesses excellent adsorption capabilities for a variety of organic chemicals and heavy metals, as well as antimicrobial qualities. Regrettably, shungite also releases a variety of chemical constituents into the water, including heavy metals. The purpose of this study was to investigate the changes in the concentrations of different heavy metals after drinking water treatment using one commercial and one non-commercial shungite sample. Additionally, the sorption of Cu(II) onto shungite at an initial concentration of 2,500 g/L was studied. The results indicated that shungite contains a variety of heavy metals such as nickel, copper, lead, cadmium, zinc, chromium, and arsenic. For a few days, lead and cadmium surpassed the maximum permissible quantity in drinking water, but nickel exceeded for up to two weeks. Simultaneously, shungite exhibited favorable copper adsorption characteristics. However, prior to utilizing shungite in drinking water treatment, it would be prudent to examine the requirement and/or wash shungite with greater volumes of water for a longer amount of time than specified in the instructions.

Shungite can be utilized in a variety of ways, including:

SHUNGITE AND WATER FILTERING

You can use it to supplement your health and wellbeing, but not to replace your current treatment plan. Medicine or other therapies should not be overlooked in choosing shungite stones. It's critical to see your doctor if you need treatment with anxiety or other mental health issues, or if you have other significant health issues.
