MOLDAVITE

Creation / Formation:

Moldavite is a stone composed of a glassy mixture of silicon dioxide, aluminum oxide, and other metal oxides. It is typically deep forest green in color, however, some specimens can be pale green, and others, especially from Moravia, are greenish brown. In rare cases, a few gem grade stones can be slightly darker than emerald. It is a tektite, amorphous in structure, and has a hardness of 5.5 to 6. Moldavite was formed during an asteroid impact that created the bohemian plateau of the Czech Republic approximately 14.8 million years ago. The material super-heated upon entry to earth’s atmosphere, then collided with the planet at a velocity of 20km per second. Upon impact, millions of tons of molten moldavite flew through the sky like large raindrops, dispersing throughout the vicinity, cooling and hardening after coming to rest. The majority of drop shaped moldavite shattered on impact as it landed at high speeds, creating other primary shapes and many nonprimary, smaller shaped fragments, only to be further altered by almost 15 million years of erosion making each piece as unique as a fingerprint. The primary shapes of this tektite include drops (teardrops), discs, elliptical (oval), and dumbbells. Primary shapes are very rare and make up less than 1% of all moldavite that has been found. Almost all of it is found in this immediate area, commonly during the plowing of fields.

The “mining” of moldavite consists of sifting through loose sands and gravels, the richest finds being in the towns of Chlum and Slavce. The village of Besednice has yielded a delicate, lacy form of moldavite, created when the molten substance landed in the water, cooling much quicker than much of the other material that created this crystal, and yielding a much more spikey structure. It is of the highest grade, and most sought after. The impact that gave birth to moldavite was an incredibly powerful event. The explosion has been estimated at six trillion megatons, which is far more than any and all atom bombs on Earth. The heat from this collision was not only hot enough to vaporize rock, but intense enough to completely pass through the earth's crust, traveling deep into the liquid iron of the planet’s core. This cataclysmic impact is believed to have disturbed the rotating liquid iron enough to cause the reversal of Earth's magnetic poles, changing forever the life of whatever existed on the planet's surface at that time.

History:

Mother Goddess:

Moldavite has a very deep and spiritual past, being used throughout history and prehistory for its powerful and divine properties. The neolithic peoples of eastern Europe began wearing moldavite at least 25,000 years ago, and wore handcrafted spiritual talismans and amulets for good fortune, fertility, spiritual development, and enlightenment. During excavations conducted by archeologists Josef Szombathy, Hugo Obermaier, and Josef Bayer in 1908, a workman named Johann Veran discovered a statue at a paleolithic site near Willendorf, a village in lower Austria. Known as the Venus of Willendorf, it was believed to be the oldest portrayal of a deity on Earth. Around this time period, the name “Venus” was used to indicate an “immodest” goddess, therefore having no connection to the well known Roman goddess of the same name. The figure was hypothesized to be a fertility deity, and believed to portray the Paleolithic Magna Mater, or Great Mother Goddess of the ancient peoples who created and worshipped it. Less known discoveries here include a good number of talismans, amulets, and ritual knives crafted from moldavite. This led researchers to believe that they shared a significant link, and indicated that it was most likely sacred to the fertility goddess. 

The Emerald Tablet

The Tabula Smaragdina, or Emerald Tablet, was believed to be authored by none other than Hermes Trimagistus, a deified figure known by many names but referenced in almost every ancient culture. To the people of Greece he was Hermes, the Egyptians called him Thoth, in Rome he was called Mercury, and in the bible he was known as Enoch. No matter what he was called, in all of these systems of belief, Hermes was known as the scribe of the gods, and brought the wisdom of the divine to the mortals of Earth. The tablet was a condensed version of the Hermetica, and contains secret knowledge of alchemy and the Hermetic tradition. The text is believed to explain in ancient, cryptic language, the secrets of prima materia and its transmutation which was used to create the famous and sacred philosophers stone. The text is also believed to explain a deep understanding of the microcosmic and macrocosmic forces. This divine knowledge was said to be written on an “emerald that fell from the sky”, but many believe that it wasn't written on an emerald, and that moldavite was used to construct this historical piece that we still strive to decode the mysteries of today. In “Decoding the Lost Symbol”, recent translations from the original Arabic read, “it is fire that became our earth” and Isaac Newton's translation states “its force is entire if it becomes converted into earth”, describing moldavite exactly. It is created through fire when the “power” or “energy” of a meteorite impacts the earth, creating a new substance through sheer force. This is seen as sacred chemistry from the gods by those who study and interpret alchemy. 

Arthurian Grail Lore 

All of us at one point or another have heard stories of the Holy Grail, which is an item from Arthurian legend, combining Christian and Celtic Pagean lore. Most often referred to as a cup, this sacred object was said to bestow immortality, power, and rebirth, not unlike the Cauldron of Cerridwen. This was believed to be the vessel that Christ drank from at the Last Supper claiming that it contained his blood. Many believe that it is symbolic of Christ’s bloodline and a symbol for the womb, tying into the theory of the Venus of Willendorf, the Mother Goddess, being a symbol of fertility. The epic “Parzival'' by Wolfram von Eschenbach clearly states that the Grail is a stone that reflects the qualities of the philosopher's stone, with the power to heal, revive the dead, and grant immortality. The same Arthurian legends tell us that when Lucifer fell from heaven, a stone fell out of his crown as he was struck in the head by the sword of Michael the archangel. This sacred crystal was symbolic of the fall of humanity and also the key to its redemption. It is believed that this stone was fashioned into a cup or bowl by another angel that served as the cup of the Last Supper. Legend says that the Holy Grail was later found and given to Napoleon, who was supposedly incredibly dissatisfied to find out that it was “just a large chunk of green glass,” which describes moldavite exactly. 

The Wishing Stone of Shambhala 

In Buddhist legend, the Cintamani is a legendary specimen linked to the philosopher's stone, and is said to grant wishes and to have fallen from the sky in a chest. This is the inspiration for Dragon Ball anime. Tibetan lore tells of a stone originating from the constellation Orion, said to be so powerful that it was sent away to Shambhala, the mythical kingdom inside the earth, for the Lord of the Earth to own. This lord, known as Snat Kumara, assists mankind in its spiritual evolution, helping us to develop into a state of ascended enlightenment, sounding very similar to Hermes Trismegistus and the Emerald Tablet.  A high abot from the Trasilumpo lamasery allegedly entrusted a Russian artist and explorer by the name of Nicholas Roerich with a fragment of the Cintamani. Roerich speculated that the stone was moldavite, engraved in Sanskrit, which he translated as “Through the stars I come. I Bring the chalice covered with the shield. Within it, I bring a treasure, the gift of Orion.” This would also tie into the stories of the Holy Grail, another cup reference. 

Properties: 

First encounter:

In modern times, Moldavite has become known as one of the more prized stones for metaphysical purposes. With wildly varying effects, it's known to create reactions from mild to almost overwhelming. This stone is known for everything from cleansing the physical body to spiritual breakthroughs and heightened perception. The common denominator of moldavite's benefits is acceleration of one's spiritual growth. “Moldavite Flush” is a term coined to describe the reaction many people have when working with this powerful crystal for the first time, as it can create a sense of heat and tingling all throughout the body. This normally starts in the hand it's being held in, then progressively moves through the body, even causing redness in the skin. Spotting a Fake: 

True genuine moldavite is becoming more rare, and the price is going up, due to the limited availability of this beautiful tektite. This has created a market for counterfeiting and the people in this business are getting better and better at their craft, flooding the market with imitations. Fake moldavite is created by melting green glass and identifying an imitation in its “natural form” is becoming more and more difficult. Some counterfeiters are even using molds created from an actual piece of moldavite, replicating the color and texture close to perfectly, and some of these specimens have even ended up in museum collections and world gem shows. When faceted, it's much easier to spot an imitation, but it is possible in its natural state as well. If your moldavite appears waxy, or wet, it's probably not genuine. Since moldavite was formed very quickly and chaotically, being vaporized, then molten, then solidified almost immediately, there are different types of inclusions that one should see when inspecting a genuine specimen. Small bubbles should be present, as well as chaotic streaks and swirls that pass through the gem, called flow lines. In addition, there is an amorphous material of silicon dioxide called lechatelierite, which is slightly harder than moldavite, so it can usually be seen on the surface. Using a magnifying glass, and looking closely at the surface, small ridges should be visible, approximately 1-2mm in size. These are lechatelierite, and they do not occur in false moldavites. One other feature to look for is smoke like schliers that are only found in genuine specimens.  When purchasing moldavite, make sure you're buying from an experienced, reputable retailer who has a history of working with tektites, and good reviews from buyers that have worked with them in the past.
