Amber is hard, translucent, fossilized tree resin produced by extinct coniferous trees from the Tertiary period. It is typically yellow in color but can range from brown to orange or red. Amber is graded by color, clarity, rarity of inclusions (popularized by Jurassic Park), hardness, color of fluorescence, and sometimes locality. Many ambers fluoresce green or blue under ultraviolet light, giving added appeal and value! Amber is unique in that it has optical features on the surface of the stone, aka fluorescence, and also desirable details on the inside of the stone (inclusions, patterns, etc). Copal is young amber that does not have the same durability. While Amber is hard enough to use in jewelry, Copal is not.
Our Mexican Amber is bought directly from the mine owners, and our Indonesian Amber has been tested in a lab in Tokyo, proving it as genuine Amber and not Copal.
