5.5 x 5.5 x 3.5 cm
Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil
Radiant… luminous… stellate… this specimen of rutile and hematite from Belo Horizonte, Brazil is all that and more. Measuring slightly over 2”, this prominent display piece is richly mineralized with decadent golden needles of rutile with a contrasting matrix of platy black hematite crystals. Burst-like bundles of rutile nucleate on the hematite in an epitaxial growth relationship, which makes for some extremely aesthetic display pieces. Both minerals are metallic, and offer a unique dark/light contrast that is both kinetic and captivating. The Minas Gerais state of Brazil is the world’s most prolific mineral producing region, known for its myriad of gemstones, and also phenomenal collector’s specimens such as this.
