Rhodochrosite is a highly sought after Manganese Carbonate. Common pink rough can be found in many places of the world and bright red gemmy crystals can be found from famous localities like Colorado, South Africa and Peru. The most prolific deposit is a famous mine in Argentina named Capillitas, which was mined by the government for precious metals, and they ran across HUGE stalactites of Rhodo! There are many other specimen and rough deposits, but very few of them are regularly producing currently.
Mineral exploration in South Africa has been thriving for centuries! Although rich in a diversity of industrial minerals, specimen mining in South Africa is actually not as prevalent as one would expect. Diamonds, Gold, Manganese, etc are the main focus. But there are a few deposits worthy of noting that have produced over the years. The Kalahari Manganese field provides for the greatest amount of diversity, the Cactus Quartz deposit produces volume in Quartz, and the Messina Copper district produces some of the finest included Quartzes in the world! While many specimens are surely there to find, bureaucracy makes South Africa a challenging country to mine for specimens.
