Our Mexican Amber is bought directly from the mine owners, and our Indonesian Amber has been tested in a lab in Tokyo, proving it as genuine Amber and not Copal. Amber is hard, translucent, fossilized tree resin produced by extinct coniferous trees from the Tertiary period. It is typically yellow in color but can range from brown to orange or red. Amber is graded by color, clarity, rarity of inclusions (popularized by Jurassic Park), hardness, color of fluorescence, and sometimes locality. Many ambers fluoresce green or blue under ultraviolet light, giving added appeal and value! Amber is unique in that it has optical features on the surface of the stone, aka fluorescence, and also desirable details on the inside of the stone (inclusions, patterns, etc). Copal is young amber that does not have the same durability. While Amber is hard enough to use in jewelry, Copal is not. All of our Indonesian Amber was hand selected in Indonesia in 2012. All of our Mexican Amber is ethically sourced directly in Chiapas straight from the miners.
Mexico is the Africa of the West! The mineral wealth there is virtually untapped in regards to specimens and cutting rough. Some of the best copper and silver deposits in the world are in Mexico! And many new types of lapidary rough are still buried waiting for excavation! We expect to see a rise in the variety of minerals and rough found in Mexico soon.
